Mentoring, monitoring and ministering to high-risk youth and the community since 1988.

Special Announcement

May 28, 2008

Dear Friends of the Ella J. Baker House,

As most of you know, the Ella J. Baker House was partially burned in a fire last Wednesday night, May 21, 2008. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and though the damage was significant, the building can be repaired. Meanwhile, our mission to Boston’s most at-risk youth continues, and we are keeping our doors open.

On behalf of the board and the staff of the Baker House, we want to thank the many who have reached out to support us over the past week.

Our building was saved by the watchful eyes of our next door neighbors, who placed the 911 call, and the quick response, bravery, and skill of Boston Fire Department. Repairs to the building will take a while, though an inspection by the city deemed the basement and first floor safe to use. Thus, some of our programs, such as our After School Drop-in Program, will continue to operate out of the building at 411 Washington Street. We are exploring the possibility of opening a satellite office at the intersection of Norwell and Washington Streets in Dorchester and will let you know as soon as this second space becomes available.

Meanwhile, the youth and children we serve continue to rely on our services, such as our

  • After School Drop-in Program
  • Exodus Program for Girls
  • Boston Prison Re-Entry Program
  • Weekly Citywide Youth Violence Task Force Meetings
  • Fatherhood Program
  • Summer Youth Employment Programs for Boys and Girls

This is where you come in. We need your help. As we take on the job of repairing the Baker House, establishing a satellite office to meet the ever-growing demands of our neighborhood youth, and continuing our ongoing programs, the financial support of our friends can make a decisive impact. We invite you to make a tax-exempt donation by visiting our website www.thebakerhouse.org or by sending your check to:

We wouldn’t have our building without our attentive neighbors and the brave firefighters of the Boston Fire Department. And our years of service to Boston’s most at-risk youth would not have been possible without the many friends who have supported our work over many years and changed countless young lives along the way. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Sincerely,

Leonard M. Lee, Chairman and Kevin C. Peterson, Executive Director; The Ella J. Baker House

Did you know?...

With the majority of our youth being raised without a father, many of the tasks our staff tackle are the day-to-day responsibilities of fathers. Their requests include: Come to court with me; help me get back in school; help me negotiate my relationships with my peers; help me learn how to drive; help me find a job.
